The National Bank of Belgium (Banque nationale de Belgique, NBB) is the central bank of Belgium and is a member of the European System of Central Banks. Since 1 January 1999 the National Bank has played an active part in the definition and implementation of the Eurosystem's monetary policy. Financial supervision is the instrument for ensuring financial stability, the second key function of a central bank, alongside monetary stability.
The Bank takes on other tasks which can be classified as follows: the management of foreign currency reserves, the collection, circulation and analysis of economic and financial information, the stability of the Belgian financial sector, the role of financial ambassador to international economic institutions. 50% of the NBB stock is freely traded on Euronext Brussels, the other 50% of the shares are owned by the Belgian government.
